English music through three reigns: George III – Edward VII
The lecture on 03 October at 09h00 will be covering English music, history, the arts and anecdotes over a fascinating period – from the middle of the 18th century to the dawn of modern music just before World War I. Included will be the last echoing strains of George Frederick Handel, and the music of Thomas Arne – of Rule Britannia fame – the Victorians (Elgar and “G & S”) and the English Impressionists. It was a colourful and patriotic age, generously sponsored by the explorations and expansionism of Empire. Interesting, too, were the fascinating musical visitors to England during this period, from the young Mozart to JC Bach, Mendelssohn, and many others. Contact Elizabeth Handley [B.Mus (Hons), H.Dip.Ed. (Wits), LTCL, Adv. Cert. (RSM)] on 011 884 0379 to book.
