Celebrating spring and operetta
Seize the opportunity to glide along in gondolas on the water ways of Venice, kiss luscious red lips, drink wine and celebrate life!
The time has come to throw out the dowdiness of the winter season and to celebrate the advent of spring with music… the most wonderful operetta music to be more precise!
On Friday, September 10th and Saturday, September 11th commencing at 19:30 respectively, in the auditorium of the University of Pretoria's Groenkloof Campus in Leyds Street, Muckleneuk, a musical operetta concert will be presented.
Operetta or “light opera” is an art form that almost fell into oblivion and South Africa is not spared this phenomenon. The operetta music treasure however, extends far wider than the well-known and ever so popular ‘Die Fledermaus’ (The bat) and ‘Die lustige Witwe’ (The merry widow); respectively, by the composers Johann Strauss and Franz Lehár.
The charm of Operetta lies in the “comic plots, fast action, extravagant staging, attire and infectious melodies” as someone once condensed. Although some might view the art form in a lesser light due to the ‘frothiness’ of it all, it needs to be pointed out that the execution of the music, especially the show-stopper arias requires unparalleled craftsmanship of each singer.
A group of opera singers set themselves to task to reintroduce operetta music to audiences. They dusted off some of these delightful melodies to bring about ‘Spring & Operetta’.
Joining forces will be the sopranos Deirdré Blignaut, Michelle Veenemans and the mezzo-soprano Linettte van der Merwe; the tenors Chris Mostert, Coert Grobbelaar and Paul Bester, while the baritones Daniël Verster, Reinhardt Nel and Rex Nigrini round off the group. They will be ably assisted by ‘Edu-Cantare’, the Students Choir of the UP Groenkloof Campus, led by Dr. Riekie van Aswegen.
The soprano diva Mimi Coertse will act as compère and elaborate on the excerpts to be performed.
Tickets will cost R100.00 per person and include a cheese and wine reception after the concert.
Ticket sales at the door will not be offered. Booking and prepayment are essential. The cut off date for electronic transactions will be Wednesday, September 8th.
