Insight Day – A musical appreciation

Saturday 25 July – From 09:00 to 15:00

Part 1: The History of Classical Music in a Nutshell

In this lecture Elizabeth Handley [B Mus (Hons), H Dip Ed (Wits), LTCL, Adv Cert (RSM)] will provide a broad overview of the rich and varied history of our Western Art Music, from its earliest beginnings during the Middle Ages, through all the main periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Nationalism and Impressionism, to the “Contemporary Scene”. She will place the most important composers into historical context, clarifying who was doing what and when. Included will be relevant artistic, literary and historical information and anecdotes, enabling you to link the music in with the other arts, and the known with the unknown.

Part 2: The Origins of Music and Dance in Prehistoric Times

In this short lecture, with a PowerPoint presentation, Elizabeth will share the fascinating origins of music and dance – the very first expressions that we know of, as found by archeologists in rock art paintings and surviving artifacts. She will explore the pre-history of the history that she teaches, taking patrons on a journey back in time, to a virtually unknown world of early musical and artistic creativity.
