Haydn – Nelson Mass

No. 11 Missa in angustiis, "Nelson Messe", D Minor, SATB, Chorus, Organ, 1801
(Mass: Service in commemoration of Christ's Last Supper, especially as embodied in the Catholic tradition.)

The mass was the most important musical product of western Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries  – that to which composers seem to have brought special care in achieving technical feats and paying homage to colleagues and patrons. Later times had other genres, even within the sphere of church music, and the mass lost its artistic prestige. Even so, masses have gone on being written, whether as liturgical settings in the old way, as more personal documents of faith and doubt, praise and prayer, or as studies in style.
