Acclaimed American pianist Spencer Myer returns to South Africa in May and June for a nationwide tour of concert recitals and orchestral performances.
This month-long tour, which will be Myer’s seventh trip to South Africa since winning the Unisa International Piano Competition in 2004, will see the popular pianist performing in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the North West Province between 25 May and 21 June 2018.
One of the most respected and sought-after musicians on the global concert circuit, noted for his “superb playing” and “poised alert musicianship”, Juilliard alumnus Myer has established a decorated track record as a recitalist, concerto soloist, lieder accompanist and chamber musician. He currently lectures at Boston’s Longy School of Music of Bard College.
South Africa holds a special place in his heart, as it was here where his career was effectively launched when he won the influential Unisa competition in 2004, followed in rapid succession by a string of other prestigious international piano prizes.
Myer’s subsequent appearances in South Africa have included performances with the KwaZulu-Natal and Cape philharmonic orchestras and the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, and solo recitals in the country’s major centres.
Among the highlights of his extensive 2018 South African tour will be a piano recital at the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Music Festival in the Overberg and a performance at the North West University in Potchefstroom.
He will then travel back to the Cape to give masterclasses and a fundraising concert recital at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow. The latter concert will be dedicated to the late John Roos, a titan of local classical music development who was associated with the Unisa music competitions for many years and headed up the Unisa Music Foundation. He passed away in January.
Following a number of concert recitals around the country, performing a lively range of repertoire, and appearing as a soloist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, Myer will wrap up his tour with a flourish on stage with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Opus 16.
