During this special musical encounter with Michael Renier, the audience can look forward to a varied programme featuring highlights from his vast repertoire, including songs made famous by his heroes – Caruso, Gigli, Lanza and McCormack. In addition, he will be rendering excerpts from his all-time favourite opera, Verdi’s Otello – he has sung the title role more than 65 times, and the Czech production he starred in was broadcast live on national television and won the prestigious Prague Opera Festival award for Best Opera in 2001. The ‘light nouveau’ part of his recital will feature excerpts from operettas as well as Neapolitan songs by composers such as Tosti (known for his Italian folk songs and light, singable, expressive works) and Cesare Andrea Bixio (who created the beautiful Parlami d’Amore Mariù). Accompanied by Johannesburg pianist Adré Russouw, Renier will be peppering his performance with anecdotes, explanations and translations, all contributing to a highly entertaining and informative musical experience.
